How to calculate the calories in a recipe?
To know the exact calories in a home-cooked recipe, you need to add up the calories of each ingredient according to its actual weight. Nutritional values are always given per 100 g of food: if you use 300 g of potatoes (77 kcal/100 g), the contribution is 231 kcal. This calculator does that automatically for the whole recipe and divides it by the number of servings, giving you total calories and protein, carbohydrates and fat with precision.
How to use the recipe calorie calculator
1. Use the search box to find a popular recipe or a specific ingredient. 2. Adjust the amount in grams of each ingredient according to your actual recipe. 3. Enter the number of servings. The calculator updates values instantly: you'll see total kcal, calories per serving and the macro distribution in the chart. You can freely add or remove ingredients to customise any recipe.

FAQ
1Is it more accurate to weigh ingredients raw or cooked?
Both methods work, but give different results. Weighing raw is more accurate because foods change weight when cooked (rice absorbs water, meat loses liquid). Our database specifies whether values refer to raw or cooked weight. As a rule, weigh ingredients in the state specified by the recipe.
2How many calories are in a homemade Spanish omelette?
A standard Spanish omelette for 4 people (3 eggs, 300 g potato, 100 g onion, 25 g olive oil) has around 750 kcal total, or roughly 188 kcal per serving. It varies significantly with oil: frying the potatoes instead of boiling them can add 150–200 extra kcal.
3Why do calories for the same recipe vary between sources?
Differences come from: (1) ingredient quantities — every cook uses different proportions; (2) cooking method — frying adds calories from absorbed oil; (3) food variety — a new potato has less starch than a mature one. That's why calculating with your actual amounts is always more accurate than using generic values.
4How are oil calories calculated in a recipe?
Olive oil contains 884 kcal/100 g (nearly 9 kcal per gram). 1 tablespoon equals ~10 g, around 88 kcal. It's the ingredient that adds the most kcal per gram, so measuring it precisely is key. Use the calculator in grams for the exact value based on the actual amount you use.
5Can I calculate calories for any recipe, even if it's not on the list?
Yes. The search bar accesses our food database and the USDA database with thousands of foods. If you can't find a specific ingredient, try searching in English or by its common name. You can build any recipe by adding ingredients one by one and adjusting the quantities.
